VR Palmeraie Douz

Unlike the very old and lush palm groves of Tozeur, where the various palm trees and fruit trees fit together harmoniously, the palm groves of Douz have a more geometric appearance. Straight paths, palm trees often aligned and further apart, following the latest agronomic development strategies.

Here, the palm groves are recent. Under the French Protectorate, between 1908 and 1956, boreholes were drilled and plots were distributed in order to promote the settlement of nomadic peoples. But they had little success. Indeed, the local populations saw them as symbols of allegiance and submission to the colonial authority as well as a threat to their way of life, their culture and their identity.
